The exact thoughts in my head as I walked up near the Subaru Ascent

Kinja'd!!!

Highlander for reference

I mean...I know “all cars look the same” but honestly I thought the subaru was a Toyota right up u ntil I saw the badge.  I guess Subaru knew what they were aiming for.

They could change a few things and make it a little less obvious.

When Subaru partnered with Toyota a few years back, I woulda bet that we’d have a Highlander/Subaru twin by now, like with the BRZ.

I t needs a big intercooler scoop on the hood, (and I’ve been doing the same thing... “what is that.. Toyota? Hyundai? Oops - nope - Ascent.”)

I wish they’d give up on the boxer , and   use a proper engine. At least in the Outback, Forester, and Ascent.

It’s weird how the particular shape of the window past the C pillar is one of the best ways to distinguish 3-row SUVs from the side

its not the boxer, I mean Porsche is doing quite well with it, it’ s that Subaru wants to be uber conservative with tune and still get amazing mileage. So what you get is an engine that isn’t very powerful and it’ s too lightly built to last.

Is the Ascent fast enough for the Salt Lake area freeways? Probably the most aggressive drivers this side of the Mississippi.

Here is the handy driving guide for the Salt Lake Valley.

From 123rd south to 6th north (salt lake area) - fast lane is 80 mph, middle lane is 75, other lanes from 70 and below. People generally stay out of the fast lane unless doing 80 or passing.

From 6th north up (north salt lake to Ogden) - HOLY CRAP STAY OUT OF THE LEFT LANE UNLESS YOU’ RE DOING 90!* Unless there is traffic and there always is in which case you should have taken Legacy and gone 55 the whole way.

From 123rd south and below (Provo valley) - No rules. left lane is likely the slow lane, the right lane somehow became the passing lane, The middle lane probably has someone towing 4 trailers with 37 inch tires.  signals are meaningless. Abandon hope.

Pretty accurate. Also noticed you guys use the carpool lane as a passing lane when 90 mph just isn’t good enough. My brother said he’ll never own a 4-cylinder car in Utah again.

W ell it doesn’t help that at 5000 feet base elevation you are down 35% on naturally aspirated power. The fact the the Crosstrek sells at all here is a mystery to me.

260 hp in the Ascent is more than enough considering it’s got the same power to weight ratio as most minivans ( i.e. it’s not underpowered for the segment) . The Outback gets the entirely decent 256 hp 3.6R which is plenty for its size; it’s only really the Forester and Crosstrek that are underengined (really just short a turbo).

I don’t know if we would have had twins for something other than a sportscar like the BRZ. I would  have expected some kind of model trade. Subaru gets a Toyota hybrid with some different bumpers and Toyota get a, um... huh, I don’t think Subaru makes anything that Toyota doesn’t already make some kind of competitor to.

This is so accurate it hurts. My motto (applies to the whole state) “If you want to get anywhere fast , stay in the right lane. ”

I don’t know what it is, but as soon as you go over the point of the mountain the freeways make no sense at all.

It’s also a pain to service. Then there’s the 2 cy linder head vs 1 cylinder head debate.

its not that im married to the engine, but it does have benefits and it isn’t tapped out just yet.

Just a pai n to service compared to an inline 4cyl. But I guess ma ny have to come out before the spark plugs ever need to be replaced anyway.
